"The Parkway PTA is excited once again to offer Wordly Wise to our students in Grades 2-5. Wordly Wise is a vocabulary program designed to provide systematic academic vocabulary instruction which develops the critical link between vocabulary and reading comprehension. The words presented are commonly encountered in grade-level literature, textbooks and standardized tests.

A student's participation in Wordly Wise is completely optional. Students interested in participating in the program will sign a "participation contract" and receive a workbook with lessons to complete independently at home. Each grade will have a parent coordinator who will provide summary review questions to also be done at home. The grade level coordinator will schedule days to give a multiple choice test for the lessons. This will generally happen at Parkway School in the morning before the school day begins. These tests will usually be given for a pair of lessons and will happen every three to four weeks. The tests will be checked and returned to students. Participation will be tracked but results will not be tracked.

Wordly Wise is a fun challenge, without the pressure of being graded. Students will learn new words and their meanings, so give it a try!"

The Parkway PTA is pleased to once again offer the Math Superstars program. There are a few changes due to our new structure at school. Parents will grade their child’s papers with the answer key and email parkwaymathsuperstars@gmail.com when the assignment is complete. 

Math Superstars program is designed to complement your child's regular classroom mathematics curriculum. Math Superstars provides students with an opportunity to practice mathematical skills appropriate for their grade level while at the same time participating in problem-solving experiences. Students are encouraged to do only one sheet per week, however, all work will be accepted throughout the school year.

2) Go to Math Superstars
3) Download the right assignments for your child.  
4) Email parkwaymathsuperstars@gmail.com to get the grading pages so you can check your child's work. 
5) Email parkwaymathsuperstars@gmail.com with child's name, grade and assignment # when your child completes an assignment and I will keep track of the progress.
6) All students who participate receive a certificate and for those who complete all 25 will receive a trophy!

Health and Wellness - Nikki Fall 

Coordinates two main events throughout the year.  1) Eat the Rainbow - A fun event where the students are encourage to try a bite of new and healthy food at lunch.  2) Fitness Week - the students track and long there healthy activities outside of school for week.

International Night  - March 18th 2020

A fun night of travel and food.  Informational tables for countries are set up in the gym.  The students get a passport and travel from country to country (table to table).  They get their passport stamped and the learn about each country.  Parents volunteer for countries and often provide a sampling of traditional food for the children to try.

Throughout the school year, please send us your photos of the first day of school, "Parade of Learners," Family Bingo Night, Fall Festival, Books & Bagels, and any other school activities and events for inclusion in the yearbook. The more pictures you send, the better our yearbook can be. Your photos should be sent to parkwaypictures@gmail.com.

Birthday Books - Contact: Chart Garg

To celebrate a students birthday the Birthday Book Program lets parents donate a book to the library and dedicate it to their child.

The Parkway PTA is pleased to support our school in its commitment to Sustainability and Green Schools.

Sustainable Development “…is meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (Brundtland Commission)

Ensuring our students are aware of environmental protection, social responsibility and how these interact with economic systems is essential to ensure a sustainable future. At Parkway, we aim to use practical ways wherever possible to help make these concepts tangible. For example:

·       Composting: to explain how to minimize organic waste going to landfill and how food scraps are a valuable resource. Students are also introduced to the concept of biodegradability and the importance of insects and worms in our ecosystem.

·       Vegetable Garden: provides an opportunity to study every stage of the life cycle of a seed from germination through to food harvest and seed collection whilst introducing an understanding of food supply chains (albeit on a small scale!).

·       Pollinator Garden: helps students understand the importance of native plants, pollinators, and wildlife and how these are all part of a healthy ecosystem.

·       Waste recycling: enables students to see at lunch and snack time how waste going to landfill can be reduced and should be properly sorted so that it can be recycled.

·       Virtual programs and Field Trips: which focus on our local environment in Connecticut and the Long Island Sound enable our students to examine biodiversity, animal adaptations, the importance of preventing water pollution and being socially responsible.
